"eyeSmart" program at AJS Nidhi HSS

After the eye-opener project NP006, NAEYAM decided to screen all the students of AJS Nidhi HSS and hence came upon the idea of a new program NP009 “eyeSmart in tie-up with Sankara Nethralaya Hospital with a motive to help out the students in getting a clear vision and improve their academic performance.

The initial screening was done through an unique concept of Sankara Nethralaya called “Vision Ambassadors”.  Through this, the Sankara Nethralaya team trained students on doing the initial screening. The candidates shortlisted by the Visual Ambassadors were subjected to final check up by the ESO Team of Sankara Nethralaya.

After the final check up, spectacles were distributed on 13th Oct 2012, to all the 44 students who had eye defects in the presence of their Parents and Teachers. The students had the option to select the frames for their spectacles and the spectacles prescribed to the students were provided free of cost by NAEYAM. According to Ms. Anuradha, Vision Screening Coordinator and Course Director, SN Academy, this event was more satisfying to their Team as they had the pleasure in handing over the spectacles to the parents. She addressed the assembled parents on importance of wearing Spectacles on a daily basis and how to approach the Free Wing of Sankara Nethralaya, for further treatment. She along with her staff then spent few minutes with each parent and kid, before delivering the spectacles / referral letter.

Dr.R.Krishnakumar, Principal, Elite School of Optometry, was so optimistic about our entire approach right from start, and even said that NAEYAM’s eyeSmart program can be a model that can be adopted in other schools.

The volunteers present for the event had the extra opportunity of receiving the blessings of these parents in person, whose satisfaction reflected in their kind words and thanking smiles on their faces.
