Eye check up camp at AJS Nidhi HSS

Conducted in coordination with Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal, Chennai 75.  Eye testing was done by Ms. Anuradha and Mr.Paulraj, technical assistants of Dr.Ashok Rangarajan, Medical Director, Sankara Eye Hospital, Chennai and who is also a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.

A total of 90 students from 6th, 7th and 8th standard were screened.  It was surprising and disappointing to note that almost 29 students were found with eye problem i.e. one-third of the students screened had defective eye sight.  Out of this, 25 students need to wear spectacles to have clear vision.

The defects of the other 4 students were severe and had to be referred to visit the hospital for further treatment.  2 of these students (B.Abdul Rahman -7B and KF.Nehafaahima-8A) have severe squint problem and they have to be evaluated again to find out the need for surgery and rectifying it.  One of them D.Manikandan (7A) has a problem called Nystagmus (severe movement of eye balls) and also vision problem.  The most pathetic condition was that of R.Afrin (8B) who did not have vision in one eye and she didn’t know about that until now. On enquiring, it was found that even though the kid had complained of vision difficulty to her mother, they haven’t taken necessary action.

NAEYAM provided the list to the Headmaster and also arranged for a meeting with the parents of these students who had defects in their eye vision.  The parents were advised on the severity of the vision problem and were asked to take necessary action.  NAEYAM also decided to provide spectacles for the students who are from very poor background

NAEYAM is also contacting other service providers for free or minimal charge service for the students recommended for surgery.

NAEYAM is also organizing a free Eye Treatment Camp for all the students in the school in tie-up with Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai.
